SHIRE HALL, MONMOUTH BUILDING SHROUD

This historic building has suffered from neglect – occasioned by a lack of funding – but an HLF award means that it is now undergoing major restoration. The building occupies a prime position in the town and surrounding it are narrow streets and hidden courtyards housing small independent shops and cafés.

To reduce the visual intrusion and help turn a negative into a positive situation, Platform One came up with the idea of a competition wherein people of all ages are invited to identify the occupations or roles of characters who represent the life of Monmouth over the past 2000 years. These are printed on massive shrouds, engaging with visitors and residents alike, who can collect Entry Forms in shops throughout the town thereby heightening awareness of the town’s history, along with the chance to win a valuable prize.

IIn 1734, money was raised to replace a Tudor timber market-house in the centre of Monmouth with a grand stone building, destined to become the Assize Court for the county. During the last three centuries the site of the Shire Hall in Monmouth has housed a theatre and a produce market, and it was the centre of national attention when four Chartist Leaders were tried there in 1840.
